Workshop to validate the National Action Plan for Family Farming “PANAF-B” 2025-2030.
Family farming is the basis for healthy, sustainable food.
On June 20, 2025, a National Action Plan for Family Farming in Burundi “PANAF-B 2025-2030” was validated, under the High Patronage of the Ministry of the Environment, Agriculture and Livestock, represented by the Assistant to the Minister.
It is an innovative plan that constitutes a national reference for sustainable agricultural projects and programs, built on 7 axes of intervention in the image of the global action plan. PANAF-B is developed with the aim of implementing the United Nations Decade for Family Farming 2019-2028, adopted on December 20, 2017 during its General Assembly according to its resolution A/RES/72/2039.
All categories of agricultural development players in Burundi were present to support and contribute to this result, which is the outcome of a long process of consultation. Presented by the expert members of the technical drafting committee, the content of the document was appreciated by the participants, for a country made up of over 98% family farms, and in which the agricultural sector contributes 39.6% to GDP and provides 95% of the food supply.
The expected results, defined actions and formulated indicators demonstrate that the promotion of family farming must be based on the development of large-scale, inclusive agroecological practices. This is one of the best sustainable options for agricultural resilience. As a result, food security in Burundi will be strengthened.
We are grateful to all those who have worked so hard to reach this milestone. First and foremost, we would like to thank the MINEAGRIE for its commitment and leadership throughout the process.
Next, the IFAD and FAO offices in Burundi are thanked for supporting the PRAFABU project (Projet de Renforcement de l’Agriculture Familiale au Burundi). This project provided INADES-Formation Burundi, on behalf of GPA/CNAF, with the funds needed to support the whole process. It was supported by the World Rural Forum under IFAD funding. Hence our special thanks to the World Rural Forum and IFAD.
Finally, INADES-Formation Burundi and the other members of the Groupe de Plaidoyer Agricole “GPA” are delighted with this historic step. They intend to invest even more in the implementation of PANAF-B 2025-2030, working alongside MINEAGRIE and its development partners to achieve the expected results.
