From March 13 to 17, 2023, a regional workshop was held in Abidjan to exchange information on microprojects and to share technical and financial management procedures. These microprojects are projects for scaling up community experiences in resilience and climate change in sub-Saharan Africa.
26 people from 11 countries took part in the regional workshop on microprojects and sharing of management procedures held from March 13 to 17, 2023 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The workshop was organized by Inades-Formation within the framework of its project “Support for the scaling up of experiences developed by communities and dynamics of citizen monitoring of public policies in response to the problem of climate change in Africa,” says ABCD project a project funded by the Basque Agency for Development Cooperation.
As its title indicates, the project aims to facilitate the scaling up of initiatives developed by communities to build resilience and/or combat the effects of climate change in sub-Saharan Africa. These initiatives, 50 of which were capitalized in a previous project by Inades-Formation, concern not only good agricultural practices, good natural resource management practices but also citizen monitoring dynamics in natural resource management.
In this second phase of the project, which consists of scaling up some of these experiences, 17 microprojects, selected by Inades-Formation, have obtained funding of 10 million FCFA each for their implementation. The holders of the microprojects are distributed in 11 countries: Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, DR Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Chad and Togo.
The micro-projects include the promotion, valorization and protection of peasant seeds, environmental education of students and the reinforcement of eco-citizenship in schools, the promotion of community initiatives for the protection of common resources, the use of solar pumps for small-scale irrigation, the development of integrated family farming systems, and the good governance of protected areas.
Kouakou Jean Martial, from the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development (MINEDD), who participated in the workshop, considers the project “very interesting on several counts. First, it is inclusive in that it affects several states at the same time and brings into service several actors with different skills. Secondly, the project has several phases and gives the opportunity to measure the real impact and to capitalize on the achievements over time. It is a great opportunity to take concrete actions to fight against climate change.
During five days, the participants, both physical and virtual, discussed the implementation of their different micro-projects, gathering the opinions of their peers for an efficient and effective implementation and a real impact of the projects. They were also trained in financial management procedures, reporting, and advocacy and communication guidelines.
In the opinion of the participants, the workshop was a great success. It allowed them to learn a lot from each other. They particularly appreciated the exchanges and the good collaboration that reigned between the participants, including the organizing team, during the whole workshop. The following comments from some participants at the end of the workshop demonstrate their great satisfaction and enthusiasm for implementing the project.
