Inades Formation Rwanda is leading a pilot capacity building initiative for water user associations. The success of this initiative will inspire other projects to promote irrigation in the country, one of the conditions for optimizing production with agricultural intensification..
Since April 2012, Inades Formation Rwanda has been building the capacity of water user associations in the Districts of Kirehe and Ngoma, Eastern Province, on behalf of a water management support project in irrigation purposes. It is a pilot initiative which consists in supporting farmers benefiting from irrigation water and developed infrastructures, bringing together associations of water users, so that they take ownership of the sustainable management of all water systems. irrigation systems in the District of Kirehe and Ngoma.
This project responds to a national priority. Indeed, the development of irrigation in Rwanda is one of the priorities retained on the path of agricultural intensification as a factor of sustainable development. The Strategic Plan for the Transformation of Agriculture and the government’s Vision 2020 foresee an expansion of irrigated areas. 17 water user associations were supported in Kirehe District, and 2 in Ngoma District. The latter operate around 2,500 hectares that have been developed or are in the process of being developed and have 10,000 members. In total, a population of more than 50,000 people is affected by the project.
