Inades-Formation Burkina organized on April 12 and 13, 2023 in the commune of Arbolléin the Nord region, public conferences for local students. The aim contribute to raising the awareness of young students on environmental protection.

“Climate change”, “plastic pollution”, “agro-ecology”: these were the topics addressed during public lectures organized for pupils in the rural commune of Arbollé. Two sessions were organized over two days. Over two hundred students from secondary schools took part.

Koudougou KABORE, Provincial Director of Environment and Sustainable Development for the Passoré province, was invited to talk to the students about climate change and plastic pollution. He enlightened the students on the notion of Climate Change and presented the causes and impact of the phenomenon. He also mentioned a few adaptation solutions, such as grass strips, stone cordons and village forests. With regard to plastic pollution, a film on the situation in Burkina Faso was shown.

Over two hundred students learn about eco-citizenship

The topic of agroecology was addressed by Ousséni OUEDRAOGO, agronomist and associate member of Inades-Formation Burkina. He pointed out that agroecology is a form of agriculture that is more respectful of the environment and human beings, with principles to be understood and respected. These include : Regenerating and maintaining natural soil fertility, saving and managing water in a sustainable way, promoting the natural health of crops and livestock, enhancing the role of trees in a production system. At the end of the various conferences, the students received posters produced by Inades-Formation Burkina on the ten commandments of the young eco-citizen formulated by the Burkina Faso Ministry in charge of the environment.

Alongside the public lectures, a radio program on the same subjects was recorded and broadcast on the Voix des Femmes radio station in Arbollé. Taking part in the show were the Passoré Provincial Director for the Environment and Sustainable Development, a student member of his school’s Green Club Bureau, and two representatives of Inades-Formation Burkina.

These various awareness-raising activities are part of the implementation of the Projet de renforcement de l’écocitoyenneté par l’éducation environnementale des élèves de la commune de Arbollé dans la région du Nord du Burkina Faso (PRECoRN). Inades-Formation Burkina is implementing this project with the support of the Basque Government, via the Basque Agency for Cooperation and Development (ABCD).

Around ten public and private post-primary and secondary schools in the commune of Arbollé are involved in this project. Inades-Formation Burkina has already helped students set up Green Clubs in their schools. A school competition and a vacation camp on the issue of climate change will be organized in 2023.

ABCD2 project

Projet ABCD-Un élève un arbre COP28

1. Project title

Supporting the scaling-up of community experiences and citizen monitoring of public policies in response to climate change in sub-Saharan Africa (ABCD 2 project)

2. Summary

The project to scale up community experiences and dynamics of citizen monitoring of public policies in the face of climate change in sub-Saharan Africa is the continuation of an initial project to capitalize on these experiences.

In fact, in 2022, with funding from the Basque Agency for Development Cooperation (ABCD), Inades-Formation carried out the “Study-capitalization of good practices in the face of the challenges of climate change and local governance in sub-Saharan Africa ” project, which capitalized on 50 experiences, including 31 climate change adaptation experiences and 19 governance experiences in 11 sub-Saharan African countries.

Based on the results of this pilot project, we have been able to identify and capitalize on some of the living realities of community efforts to combat the problems posed by climate change in Africa. They have been developed by a variety of players, including public services specializing in environmental and climate change management, civil society organizations and farmers’ organizations.

This second phase of the project, which will run for 30 months (2022-2024), aims to (i) scale up these good experiences developed by communities in African countries, in terms of adaptation, mitigation and resilience to climate change and of (ii) support the dynamics of citizen monitoring of the associated policy and regulatory frameworks.
